2008 World Figure Skating Championships

Well, this week the 2008 ISU World Figure Skating Championships take place in Sweden.

The schedule is located at: http://www.isufs.org/events/wc_2008_colouredtimeschedule.pdf.

Results will be posted at:  http://st.sportcentric.org/results/wc2008/ and  http://web.icenetwork.com/events/detail.jsp?id=34531.

US ice dancer Brent Bommentre checked luggage–with his ICE SKATES and costumes — was lost on the flight to the competition in Sweden. Two blogs chronical the problems of over-strict airline security which require ice skates to stay in checked baggage, which sometimes gets lost. Ice skates are such significant weapons, afterall. The intial blog written by his partner Kim Navarro is here, and then there is another blog here.

You can catch the competition action on TV here in the US at:

Thursday March 20, 7:30-11 p.m. EDT, ESPN

Friday March 21, 7:30-11 p.m., EDT, ESPN

Saturday March 22, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. EDT, ABC

Sunday March 23, 5-7 p.m., EDT, ESPN

Since I was studying abroad throughout almost the entire skating competitive season, I really haven’t even seen the competitive programs for any of the non-American skaters. I’m going to go out on a limb and make my predictions anyway, based on little more than my gut instinct. I haven’t the time to dig up all the competition results for the past two years or determine the potential points-value of the top skater’s programs if they were to actually skate clean. These predictions are not how I would like for the competition to end up, but how I guess they might actually finish.  And with little research, this is little more than a guess. :)

Doesn’t look to be a strong year for the Americans, once again. If only our senior pairs national champions, and 3 of our 4 medalists in the senior ladies were eligible by age to compete! Though we do seem to keep dominating at the junior level.

  1. Is there anywhere I can obtain a list of sings that each pair/dance skated to? I’m trying to locate a particular song I heard on the 21st and am having no luck at all. Thanks

  2. I would try: http://www.skatemusiclist.com/season_2007_2008.html. They will probably update the list within the next couple of weeks.

Beyound that, if you know the name of couple, or can narrow it down to a short list, try to google for that pair’s particular fan websites. Most fan sites keep a running list of program music, or you could try contacting either the site owner or other fans on a website message board.

Also, the ISU website has mini biographys that of most skaters. I believe that those include current program music. Go to the ISU results, http://st.sportcentric.org/results/wc2008/ and try click on the names of individual pairs/dance teams whenever they are listed.

    Good luck!

  3. Hey, I just heard about this great ice skating movie that comes out on DVD April 1st and thought you might be interested….THE CUTTING EDGE: CHASING THE DREAM! It stars Matt Lanter and Francia Raisa and sounds like it will be a classic!

    Synopsis:
Championship figure skater Zack Conroy (Matt Lanter) is a brilliant but dangerous competitor, ignoring all risks in pursuit of perfection. But, when his partner and former lover is injured in a devastating fall, Zack finds himself on thin ice and in need of someone new. Enter the beautiful Alex Del Gado (Francia Raisa), a tough-talking hockey player whose raw, unrefined talent is surpassed only by her passion and desire. Tempers flare and sparks fly—both on and off the ice—as the unlikely duo chases an impossible dream on the road to the world championships—where the only thing more dangerous than skating is falling in love.

  4. Hey, Rochelle, you may want to set up one of those anti-spam picture-word thingies…

If you can see my e-mail address, send me an e-mail. I have an idea for you.
